ABSTRACT

This chapter gives some background information about this edited volume. China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ (OBOR) Initiative provides a historic opportunity for further China–Europe maritime cooperation, as both sides have much to share and more to build in terms of vision, policies and security, making it possible for a new line in the already-thriving exchanges across the Eurasian continent. However, the ambitious Initiative faces enormous challenges of geopolitical suspicion and security risks along the new Maritime Silk Road. In order to help mitigate these challenges and risks, this volume collects chapters which explore and discuss the various issues concerned.
