ABSTRACT

Employers have voiced their concerns that graduates are often not ‘business ready’ when entering the world of work. Our research shows that employers are not looking for ‘the finished product’; instead, they emphasise the need for graduates to have a set of developed soft skills (including attitude and behaviour) that enables them to work in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment (VUCA). It is evident that the current structure of university programme(s) does not support such skills development; instead, subjects are taught in silos and remain focused on knowledge acquisition. This chapter presents the findings from a tested framework called Teaching Inside Out (TIO), which was informed by in-depth interviews with employers and a panel discussion, and was tested over a period of two years at undergraduate and postgraduate level. This chapter gives guidance on how to implement TIO at module, programme and curriculum level.
