ABSTRACT
When the Western world began to imagine that to be rich was to be civilized, it assumed that as its mechanic skill would inevitably increase, its welfare would also be equally increased, its prosperity would become permanent, all men would be equal because equally supplied with indefinite goods, and progress would be infinite.
