Nonviolent revolution in China book
ABSTRACT
China’s ‘authoritarian resilience’ has puzzled observers and many China watchers have predicted the decay of the Chinese Communist Party. Is China ripe for the outbreak of another nonviolent pro-democracy revolution? This chapter first surveys prior episodes of nonviolent pro-democracy revolutions in modern China, including the Hundred Flowers Movement (1957), Democracy Wall Movement (1978–1979), the NPC Direct Elections Movement (1986–87), and the Tiananmen Square Movement (1989). The chapter then surveys reasons for the absence of revolutionary episodes over the last three decades and concludes by reflecting on factors that will make nonviolent revolution more or less likely in China’s future.
