ABSTRACT
The death of two journalists in the European Union in winter of 2017/2018, plus the fiery popular rhetoric of President Donald Trump against media workers, raised widespread concerns about the danger. This chapter explains how the project came together, organised itself, worked in practice and deployed techniques to make it successful. The death of Bolles inspired the fledging IRE to create what it called the Arizona Project. The Arizona Project recognised from the start that reporters were not and could not be murder cops, but they could report on the wider context of the crime and continue the journalist’s work. In Arizona, law enforcement had been only partly successful in its work. Richard had read of the Arizona Project and what was called the Khadija Project in 2015.
