ABSTRACT

Sport can have a wide range of physical, psychological and social benefits for children. However, high-profile cases and empirical research demonstrate that it can also be a context within which children can be maltreated and have their rights violated. Threats to children in sport across Asia are considered, both in terms of children being directly impacted through participation or indirectly as a result of mega sport events. The ways in which these threats can be mitigated through the International Safeguards for Children in Sport are discussed along with the pillars which should support effective implementation. Examples of related research in the context of sport in Asia are summarised and future directions for work in this field are proposed.
