ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the development of disability sport at the elite level in China from 1983 to the present. It begins with an interpretation of why elite disability sport received the central government’s strong support, examines government policies and considers the government’s possible political motivations. It examines the elite disability sport policies and systems in order to understand how they have achieved success. It concludes that government support is the key to China’s success in elite disability sport, especially through the China Disabled Persons’ Federation, which contributed to China’s dramatic success in the Paralympics Games.
