ABSTRACT

Gender equality measures within sport policy in Japan are assessed from the perspective of the relationship between the current status of gender equality and gender equality policies. According to the Gender Gap Index data, Japan’s ranking is low, particularly in the politics and labour/economy areas. In order to improve these positions, the Japanese government has implemented some gender equality policies. And the positioning of sport within such gender equality policies has become stronger in recent years. At the same time, gender equality has been addressed as an issue in sport policies. However, the influence of current measures in women’s sport on social reform is limited. It is a problem for sport policy to promote gender equality in Japanese society. The issue of women’s sport is an issue of sustainability for sport in Japan.
