ABSTRACT

The Far Eastern Championship Games (FECG), also known as the Far Eastern Championships or Far Eastern Games, was a multisport event in early twentieth century Asia. The first FECG was organised in 1913, and the last was held in 1934. A total of ten FECGs were held successively in the Philippines, China and Japan in rotation. The FECG not only provided a pivotal paradigm for the introduction and development of modern Western sport across East Asian countries but also had a tremendous impact on the local societies of these regions. In the political field, the FECG promoted international relations between the Philippines, China and Japan. In the economic field, the FECG triggered the rise of the Asian sport industries and market. In the cultural field, the FECG fostered cultural communication between East and West as well as the celebration and promotion of the inheritance of East Asian cultures.
