ABSTRACT
Asia’s most prestigious national football competition is the AFC Asian Cup. Staged for the first time in 1956, it has developed into a sporting event with immense cultural, sporting and economic significance. However, this development has continuously been interrupted by unavoidable political confrontations on the world’s largest continents. This chapter provides an introduction to some of the key sport political challenges that the tournament has faced over time.
