ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the discourses of legitimation of political decisions, actors, and policies in the news. It focuses on the presentation of the research findings, by putting the developed analytical framework into use. The book explains how the two discourses and their mechanisms are used to legitimate or delegitimate the authority positions of the involved actors and of journalists themselves, and validate the hegemonic ideologies over the economic crisis and its handling. It reflects on the main research findings, on the appropriateness of its theoretical-analytical approach, and on the study’s limitations. The book focuses on the two newspapers studied and on the news media representations of the economic crisis in the country, to assist the contextualisation of the study in its mediated environment and related journalistic practices.
