ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the building stock in Malta, including the legislation related to the energy performance of buildings and the current state of nearly zero-energy buildings (NZEB) implementation. The prevention or reduction of heat gains from solar radiation through appropriate shading during summer is critical. A detailed overview of the building stock in Malta can be found in the nearly zero-energy buildings plan for Malta and in the Malta’s Long-Term Strategy for Mobilising Investment in the Renovation of the National Stock. Grants are offered specifically for roof thermal insulation material and double-glazed windows or doors. The policy action plan proposed measures to facilitate NZEB that are divided into two categories. The first category deals with soft measures i.e. measures not requiring European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) or national funding sources, while the second category concerns fiscal measures i.e. policy proposals requiring ERDF or national funding sources.
