ABSTRACT

Michel Fain elaborated the concept of censorship of the woman-as-lover in his article “Prelude to fantasy life”. “The censorship of the woman-as-lover is the censorship introduced by the mother of the child when part of her erotic libido refuses to be a mother”. This censorship is exercised when the mother suspends her role as a mother to resume her role as a woman. She decathects her child in favour of a third who can be the object of her fantasy. Denise Braunschweig and Fain suggested that the censorship of the woman-as-lover helps the child develop a double identification. In contact with its mother who once again becomes a woman, the child will develop an identification both with the penis desired by the mother and with the mother herself desiring this penis.
