ABSTRACT

In many respects, the analyst's psychic state in the session belongs to the register of maternal reverie. It is a way for the analyst to bring into resonance all the levels of awareness of his being in order to be available for any experience he may encounter coming from the patient or from what he feels inwardly. Rather, it is a process that leads the analyst to understand the experience with which the patient is confronting him. The analyst finds himself faced with an aspect of the patient's functioning, but if he tries to present it to the patient directly, he finds himself in the position of the removal man who picks up a piece of furniture to move it from one place to another. Even without complementary material, it is a possible interpretation. The analyst's employment of his capacity for reverie requires real confidence in the analytic process as well as in his way of going about it.
