ABSTRACT
An interpretation is characterised by both its target and the place assigned to the analyst by the patient at the moment when he speaks. It is in these different respects that interpretation in the transference, of the transference and transference interpretation are differentiated. Each of them gives a different weighting to the three essential motive forces of every interpretation. Interpretation in the transference is an interpretation in the here and now of the session, where the intervention concerns at the manifest level the transference relationship. However, whatever the perspective is, all forms of interpretation are established in the transference. Thus, even interpretations that are aimed at the surface of the transference relationship (interpretations in the transference) pertain in different degrees to interpretation of the transference or transference interpretations. The interpretation in the transference also takes on retrospectively a colouring of transference interpretation or interpretation of the transference.
