ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide an understanding of the foundation and key elements of communication competence as well as its development at work. Competence in communication has been linked with numerous positive outcomes, such as individual career success, reduced levels of stress, and an increase in well-being, as well as satisfaction. Competent communication is not merely a matter of what is done in communication, but also of what is known of communication and how motivated people are to communicate. Communication competence has been shown to be a prerequisite for effective leadership, regardless of the style or approach of leadership. The ideals, expectations, and norms of communication should in some way be discussed and reflected upon in the workplace or in teams. The goal of systemic communication training is often to raise participants’ awareness of the consequences of communicative actions, to improve their overall understanding of social interaction, and to provide a chance to practice and receive feedback.
