ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the question of what happens when creative practice becomes research and is subject to institutional research frameworks and protocols including ethical oversight of creative-practice research projects. It explores the ways in which risk management has come to form a key frame for the consideration of research ethics on the part of researchers. The book analyses the theme of institutional politics and neoliberalism and extends his critique to the visual arts more broadly and the way in which artistic research enables critical evaluation of ethical aspects of knowledge. Ethics compliance is contextualised within the wider challenges facing the academy in the 21st century, as creative practices have entered the frame of research at the same time as Universities have adopted institutional risk management strategies.
