ABSTRACT

Ethical creative practice research is more than getting an ethics clearance and agreeing to act responsibly, honestly and with integrity. The research ethics approval, issued by Edith Cowan University, was based on the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research guidelines and pertains to low-risk, responsible research on animals, humans and the use of previously collected data. The fibres of a ball of string are travail stained and imbued with the stories and language of the making and the tacit knowledge of the maker, the Country and echoes of the place where they were collected and made. The entangled lines of material force in the meshwork of becoming are a complex liminal space – a ball of string or a yarn. The history of the balls of yarn is also critical to the discussion.
