The Geneva Conventions 1949, their Additional Protocols and customary international humanitarian law embody the obligation to respect and ensure respect for international humanitarian law. The obligation to ensure respect has been subject for rife debate, especially the role played by third parties. This chapter will elucidate the obligation to ensure respect by third parties, in the context of the role played by Kenya and Uganda in the neighbouring South Sudan.
