ABSTRACT

BrainCanDo aims to develop an educational approach informed by the latest evidence in educational neuroscience and psychology to provide educators with practical strategies to improve their teaching which are informed by state-of-the-art research. This chapter provides an overview of some of the latest research concerning themes such as motivation, memory, sleep, well-being and social development alongside practical suggestions for how such research can inform teaching and learning. It also aims to address controversies concerning the application of educational neuroscience and psychology in teaching. Since its inception seven years ago, BrainCanDo has brought together researchers and teachers to evaluate practical effectiveness of research in educational neuroscience and psychology. One of the central aims of BrainCanDo has been to debunk some of most prevalent neuromyths – for example, that girls are not neurologically wired to be risk-takers – and replace them with genuine evidence from neuroscience and psychology. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
