ABSTRACT

The BrainCanDo conference included lively panel discussions; was led by Queen Anne’s head teacher, Julia Harrington, who focused on some of the opportunities and challenges inherent in trying to meaningfully bring psychology and neuroscience research into educational practice. Since the founding of BrainCanDo, there has been an increase in the number of teachers at Queen Anne’s who seek to engage with evidence-informed teaching practice. In addition to the opportunities for metacognition in the classroom, the principles of metacognition are applied throughout school life. The school consistently adds value to students’ academic performance; in particular, at the General Certificate of Secondary Education exams level. In addition to directly participating in research in educational neuroscience and psychology, the school is constantly looking for opportunities to apply research within the wider school environment; for example, a gratitude project and a later day start time project have been undertaken.
