ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of executive functioning skills (EFSs) in the context of primary and secondary school-aged development and outlines an approach for building EFSs that is being used in both primary and secondary schools in the United Kingdom and Canada. Parents who care about their children’s learning and are keen to do the right thing to support the development of positive skills and good habits are vital partners in the education of young people. In fact, young people who struggle with metacognition need even more support to develop and practice their metacognitive skills. Young people are encouraged to try problem-solving strategies next time for greater success. Just as with other types of individual difference, such as dyslexia, a targeted and initially intensive intervention may be required to strengthen EFSs for some young people.
