ABSTRACT

The importance of fostering a regular life of prayer is explicitly stated in a series of precepts entitled L’Estimeur du Monde, which occur in the Petites Heures after the Calendar. Recourse to prayer and participation in the ceremonies and Offices of the Church are presented as a pervasive and consistent part of a prince’s daily schedule. The rubrics indicate how the prayers are to be recited in between, as it were, the major actions of the liturgical celebration while the pictures, for the most part, register the actions themselves. Provision is made for including the names of one’s choice at the commemoration of the living and of the dead, and in the prayers before Communion the aid of the angels and saints is invoked with special reference to Saint John the Baptist and Saints Peter and Paul.
