ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the use of a Solution Focused (SF) approach by a clinical psychologist in her work with children and young people with physical health conditions, their families and staff teams in hospitals in the UK. There is, to date, little outlined in the literature about acute inpatient working with children using an SF approach. Here the application of the model outside of the traditional therapy hour in a room is discussed. The author describes her use of “SF injections”: short conversations with SF elements employed due to often having limited time in an acute medical setting.

A brief review of the literature on SF working in physical health is given, specifically in children’s health. Some exploration is made of why the SF approach is particularly useful in working in chronic health. Examples are offered of short SF conversations with children and young people with chronic health conditions while they are inpatients, and with their families and staff teams involved in their care.
