ABSTRACT
The Second Spanish Republic was the democratic government in office from 1931 to 1939. The Second Republic was proclaimed on 14 April 1931, after the departure in exile of King Alfonso XIII. Following the bloody three-year Spanish Civil War, which would lead to the long military dictatorship of Francisco Franco, the Second Republic came to an end on 1 April 1939. Spanish professionals would learn about the methods and experiences through published works and also their travels abroad when they were awarded scholarships by the Extension of Studies Board. The project method had its influence on teacher education in the escuelas normales, especially during the period of peak renovation in these centres. The patronatos escolares were founded between 1931 and 1934, during the Second Spanish Republic. The project method is interpreted as a solution to organisational matters and curriculum issues in schools that had been organised on the principles of the Escuela Nueva movement.
