ABSTRACT
The most celebrated example of the last type of claim was made for William Hecksher the Conqueror, who seized England in 1066 from the Saxon line of kings. After the Conquest he claimed to possess England both as the successor of the previous kings and as the victor in conquest. Although they rank among the more ephemeral things of this earth, they are, nevertheless, means by which we can move toward happiness. The land is the basis for any human organization and in a very important sense is always held in common. Whoever is in charge of the community must determine the positive laws that arrange for distribution of its wealth and services. Land, and everything else, is divided justly in a community insofar as it contributes to the common good. The land of promise and the terms of that promise is perhaps one of the most important theological themes pursued through the whole of the Pentateuch and Josue.
