ABSTRACT

The advent of artificial intelligence in mobility and transport is driven by “reflexive modernization” and is as serious as the big bang often associated with it. The emergence of every technology is not that abstract a process but rather full of very concrete and tangible factors making the technological development subject to experience. This chapter presents insights from a detailed analysis of films produced by the automotive industry about autonomous vehicles. It gives an example of what it means to deconstruct the backstage of producing technological mobilities futures. The detailed methodological conception and derivation of the methodology and the research design is documented in Schonewolf. The pictorial implementation of certain technical features like external communication of the vehicles by light and sound signals again support the predominance of the car in the urban context. Visualization of future technologies are shaping social realities and are thus in need of being questioned by social science.
