ABSTRACT
Motherhood is ‘‘both a public event and a very personal experience’’. This introductory chapter provides an insight into some representations of mothers and motherhood in mythology and notably in the Bible, followed by a typology of mothers in various parts of the world. The concepts of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ mothering are also revisited, with issues related to mothers and motherhood, and a reflection on the shifts that have occurred over time.
