ABSTRACT

Originally proposed by Glaser and Strauss, grounded theory holds much potential as a research approach for writing center studies. Through grounded theory, codes and categories emerge from the data, and resulting theory is grounded in data rather than imposed from without. This chapter discusses the research base for grounded theory and the scope of the method. It also covers some applications of grounded theory in the writing center literature as well as classic applications in the tradition of the technique’s founders. To conclude, the chapter suggests possible directions for other grounded theory studies in writing centers.
