ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights key components of case study research design and, by pointing to recent examples of case study research from within writing center studies, articulates a common critique of this research design, namely its inability to offer formal generalizations based on highly contextualized findings. After arguing against this critique, this chapter concludes by suggesting that in a time of increased public skepticism toward higher education and increased attacks on groups of marginalized people, writing center researchers should design case studies to engage more public-facing scholarship dedicated to social justice.
