ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Vygotskyan learning theory is described in terms of its relevance and usefulness for writing center studies. Presenting relevant background to Vygotskyan learning theory by describing Vygotsky’s concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and the related concept of scaffolding, the chapter differentiates this theory from collaboration theory as used in writing center studies. The chapter then discusses the possibilities Vygotskyan learning theory can offer to help writing center researchers develop robust research agendas.
