ABSTRACT

St Pierre (2016) observes that social science researchers often rush to application without first considering history, philosophy and politics of various empiricisms. The premise of this chapter is that we hold these concerns for outdoor studies research. Here we discuss ways that philosophy and methodology are always already entangled and pose the question of what new or alternative ways of thinking research might emerge when we reconsider the enmeshed dynamics of ontology, epistemology and matter? Researchers are prompted to engage with philosophical and methodological shifts that are underway in related disciplines, and are encouraged to creatively and productively reconceptualise outdoor studies research, pedagogy and curricula.
