ABSTRACT

We consider a range of ethical issues embedded in research, the values that may underpin ethical practice and the significance of the process of research approval in institutions. Ethical mindfulness and practice are central. Researching outdoor studies involves continuous, dynamic ethical decision-making, influenced by theoretical frameworks adopted by the researcher, their knowledge and experience and chosen ethical codes of practice. The scenarios presented show that ethical concerns stem from respect for participants and recognition of the complexity and fluidity of human and environmental interactions. Ethical principles that guide quality research and the dilemmas that may occur in the field are discussed.
