ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a curriculum for practice research suitable for postgraduate social work students. It outlines what author have provided to students in the UK, which has enabled some to undertake research of the quality required by an international peer-reviewed journal. The chapter provides some examples of published papers arising from the training to demonstrate what is possible for the students to achieve. Practice research starts and finishes with practice. Therefore the research questions should arise from practice. This could be from a student’s practice placement or from their own work, if they are qualified or working alongside their studies. Practice research should not be conducted solely for the education of the student or practitioner. If the answer to the research question is already known, there is arguably no justification for further research. Careful choices need to be made about which research methods are taught in a practice research curriculum.
