ABSTRACT

Spirituality and wellness are arguably inextricably connected. Wellness can be defined as the path to achieving well-being, a path that includes physical, mental, and spiritual health, self-responsibility, social harmony, environmental sensitivity, intellectual development, emotional well-being, and occupational satisfaction, whereas spirituality “includes experiencing oneness with nature and beauty and a sense of connectedness with self, others and a higher power or larger reality, concern for and commitment to something greater than self”. The quest for spirituality is in some ways based on the increasing secularization of society. Travel has been viewed as a way of enhancing and transforming individual self-development and even changing world views. The role of the destinations or locations in the creation of spiritual and wellness experiences plays a somewhat ambivalent role in spiritual and wellness tourism, as the internal journey is often given greater emphasis than any external setting.
