ABSTRACT

The Bulgarian and Byzantine fortress Beroe had always been a significant Northern Thrace center. Although the war-flails are usually single finds from the settlements and fortresses of the Early Bulgarian medieval period and the period of the Byzantine conquest (tenth to twelfth century), this weapon has piqued scientists’ interest because of its rareness. The warfare objects of this type were automatically considered reliable evidence for the Pechenegs’ presence, regardless of whether their archaeological environment has any grounds to justify such a claim. The elements that were used to attach the impact head to the flexible tie could be found in ten of the war-flails. Maybe the cross hole in war-flail number 30 from Odartsi means that it was attached to a belt or a rope. However, the lack of archaeological environment information means we cannot date them precisely.
