ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book analyzes the promotion of men’s caring capabilities in the Austrian national context. It discusses critical feminist pedagogy as a powerful form of counter-politics against neoliberal constraints and standardizations. The book describes the positive public role of gay and queer masculinities in their intersection with other identity configurations. It focuses on transformations of men’s and fathers’ role in China. Starting with reflections on the subordination of women in the household, the book presents further steps in teaching gender equality and promoting active fatherhood. It offers a challenging and provocative reflection on the role of “tradition” in gender transformative practices in Swaziland. Masculinity is a performative identity, meaning that it is maintained through repetitive performances and exists only at the point of action.
