ABSTRACT

Issues related to trans individuals (rights, identity, legal status) have become one of the “hot topics” in the social imagination in recent years. The idea of using the term “global(izing)” rather than simply “global” is to emphasize that the process, practices, and lived realities of globalization are likely to continue increasing at an accelerated pace in the near future. This chapter explores and defines trans lives from a different perspective and defines what is meant by a “trans life” and the ways in which they are “just like everybody else” and the ways in which they are distinct. The placement of such analysis within the context of a global(izing) world will also help to highlight the commonalities and nuances of what it means to be trans in the contemporary global age. Trans issues have become global social issues, and ones that matter. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
