ABSTRACT

The past decades have been marked by a significant increase in number of, and diversity within, gender affirming surgical procedures. A growing number of psychological and medical societies have adopted professional guidelines concerning provisions of care for gender affirming procedures and an increasing number of health insurance providers allocate insurance reimbursement for transgender-related care. This chapter will focus on how access to, and conduct of, gender affirming surgeries have converged/diverged in different global contexts. A scoping review of the literature will focus on the intersection between gender affirming surgeries and legal, medical and social norms. Different geographical contexts will be analyzed in the context of (financial) access to care, differentiated medical protocols and socio-legal requirements of gender affirming surgeries. And, the relationship between different geographical contexts through the exploration of global surgical standards, the trans advocacy, as well as medical tourism will be examined.
