ABSTRACT
Pierre Janet’s face expressed his concerns regarding conversion and brought unpleasant intrusions of his struggles with Sigmund Freud. The intruded dissociative subsystem will typically attempt to avoid or delimit the intrusions, particularly when they pertain to troublesome feelings, thoughts, and actions. Since intrusions of nonintegrated trauma-related actions and contents are dissociative per definition, any subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder is dissociative. Anticipating a rejoinder, Janet continued: One could counter that the opening sentence of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) dissociative disorders section at page 291 clearly states that dissociative disorders can include a disruption of and/or discontinuity in the normal integration of body representation, motor control, and behaviour. To get well, individuals with autism spectrum disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and DSM-5 dissociative disorders must synthesize, personify, and presentify these different subsystems, including their traumatic memories.
