ABSTRACT

If national integration policy works effectively, a crisis will not bring about the segmentation of a nation. Conversely, if it does not work effectively, a crisis will easily divide a nation state. In order to analyse how effective national integration policy works, it is necessary to understand how national integration policies changed before and after regime change in 2003. This chapter sheds light on how the new regime attempted to integrate the Iraqi nation and compares its policies to those of the old Bathist regime. Nationalism puts the highest value on the nation. Therefore, policies describing brilliant past glories to generate pride can be used in integration policy to boost nationalism. In reality, the regime change happened in 2003 was a result of the US invasion, not of overcoming dictatorship or recovering freedom and democracy. National integration policy changed from emphasising integration by a revolutionary regime that protected the nation, to strengthening integration based on democracy and equality.
