ABSTRACT

After a period of consensus following the Islamic Revolution and the hostage crisis, and later about the UN sanctions about the Iranian nuclear program, Europe and the USA have had often different and sometimes opposed policies to dealing with Iran. The EU policy of “critical dialogue” with Iran was often opposed by the policy of containment and sanctions imposed by the USA. In spite of the failure of the first nuclear agreement signed in 2013 by France, UK and Germany, the JCPOA of 2015 signed by all the permanent members of the UNSC was a real but short-lived success of the never-ending efforts of dialog of the EU with Iran.
