ABSTRACT

New-type major-country relationship remains the key to understanding China’s foreign policy. To a large extent, the intentions, connotations and goals of the new-style major-country relations have been integrated into “new-type international relations”. In June 2013, when meeting with US President Barack Obama, Xi Jinping proposed the “new-type major-country relationship based on mutual respect, win–win cooperation, non-conflict and non-confrontation”. The establishment of a new-type major-country relationship is a major strategic decision made by both sides based on the historical experiences and the national conditions of the two countries as well as the international situation. One of the major historical and theoretical backgrounds of building the new-type major-country relationship between China and the USA is the fear of the so-called “Thucydides trap”. Therefore, the building of a new-type major-country relationship also shows the responsibility of China as a rising power.
