ABSTRACT
With the rate of different addictions on the rise, the search for effective treatment methods to tackle alcohol and substance use disorder is more crucial than ever. As a complex disorder, the most efficacious addiction treatment is believed to involve a combination of behavioral therapy together with appropriate medications. This chapter reviews FDA-approved medications, as well as off-label and promising therapeutic pharmacological treatments for alcohol use disorder, nicotine use disorder, opioid use disorder, cocaine use disorder, and cannabis use disorder. The aim of this chapter is to provide readers with a basic understanding of medications used clinically for each disorder, together with their efficacy and safety profile.
