ABSTRACT

Families are adversely affected by a member’s addictive behavior, but limited evidence-informed family-centered interventions are available to help families effectively meet their biopsychosocial needs (Ventura & Bagley, 2017). To inform social work practice, research, and education around families affected by a member’s substance misuse or gambling disorder, this chapter provides an overview of family-centered practices in substance misuse and substance use disorders. It begins with a rationale for helping families, provides an overview of theories that may be used to understand families affected by a member’s substance misuse or problematic gambling, reviews evidence-informed help for families, and concludes with recommendations for social work (and other professional) practice, research, and education.
