ABSTRACT

The exponential growth of digital technologies is affecting various economic sectors and the way industries operate and perform. However, there are few empirical research studies that analyze how organizations face digital transformation, especially in the agri-food sector. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book begins with an overview of the history of the most common applications of digital system in farming operations, retracing the steps accomplished by the industrial and agriculture revolution. It presents a holistic view of the research, discusses the applicability of the main empirical results collected in SMEs enterprises operating in the agri-food sector, and provides a proposal for future research. The book also discusses the apparent contradiction that while digitalization is pervasive and impacts the organizational practices of any company, what is happening in the agri-food sector seems to be absent from the relevant research discourse in management literature.
