ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses destination image, perception of tourism destination and tourist motivation in relation to tourism experience. Destination image is a multidimensional concept comprising of both symbolic and tangible features. It forms through accumulated impressions, expectations, emotional thoughts, beliefs, knowledge and prejudices about the destination’s attributes. Tourist perception towards destination image is a crucial element when accessing a destination. Thus, it is often used to examine tourism impacts, tourist decision-making and tourism experience. Another key factor that affects tourist perception is motivation. Motivation is a crucial element of understanding tourist behavior as it provides insights into tourists’ expectations, objectives and requirements when involved in tourism activities. Thus, tourism experience is closely linked to travel motivation. The chapter deduces several perception and motivation theories from previous studies in order to provide an overview of the constructs in relation to tourism experience. The importance of these elements when practitioners are strategizing and implementing positive and memorable tourism experiences is highlighted.
