ABSTRACT

The main goal of this chapter is to discuss the concept of the Memorable Tourism Experience (MTE) and to review the results of memorable experience studies. Since both the experience itself and the process of memory generation are the basis of MTEs, not every tourism experience is to be considered memorable. This revision is crucial to provide a broader understanding of the term, as there is no consensus among authors on what makes some experiences more memorable than others. We provide a synthesis on the results of the main researches of MTE, which indicates a lack of discussion on the central characteristics of memorable experiences, such as evoking emotions and providing a meaningful experience to the tourist. Also, it reinforces the necessity of providing novelty to the tourist, which means managers should deliver innovative products and understand tourists’ background and travel habits. This chapter should help readers to find gaps in the area and guide future directions on memorable experience researches. Furthermore, our proposed framework facilitates an understanding of the central characteristics of memorable tourism experience using a holistic approach.
