ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of case studies on the integration and use of makerspaces for young children in Iceland. The case studies are informed by work undertaken in Iceland on identifying and analysing the pedagogies applied in Innovation and Entrepreneurial Education in schools. Creative thinking does not necessarily bring about innovation; a novelty tends to require creative action. Some scholars, nevertheless, do not make a distinction between innovation and creativity. The emancipatory pedagogy allows learners the most freedom and agency, representing a mode where teachers and learners can communicate as equals. The analytical model of pedagogies presented provides a strong framework for our work on makerspaces in the Icelandic Makerspaces in the Early Years: Enhancing Digital Literacy and Creativity project and helps us to detect how pedagogical approaches emerge in makerspaces aimed at younger children. Innoent is a non-profit organisation offering training courses for teachers and courses for children.
