ABSTRACT

Staffs were encouraged to discuss their own views about marking and how it impacted their lives, through interviews and discussions which took place before and after the trialled self-assessment project. Some children stated that they felt grown up for being able to look for evidence themselves – almost like they were being the teacher. There were also many positive comments about how visual the tool was, simply looking for the colours, rather than reading through lots of comments. Children were expected to respond to the green comment, making the improvements or elaborating on what they had written/achieved in order to enhance their learning further, or show deeper understanding and greater depth. This system was well-established, staff were efficient and children were good at responding when needed. There was discussion about how effective marking and feedback was, particularly for younger children who may not even be able to access or understand the comments made.
